Al centro del Lago di Como, sul promontorio che sovrasta
Varenna, si erge, da più di mille anni, il Castello di Vezio, dove, in un
contesto di ineguagliabile bellezza naturale, si fondono, in perfetta armonia
tra di loro, la storia, l’arte, la natura e la cultura del territorio.
Falconeria
Una delle particolarità di questo castello è che da qualche
anno ospita un centro di cura ed addestramento per rapaci, che permette ai
visitatori di conoscere ed apprezzare l’antica arte della falconeria. Le fasi di addestramento si tengono
normalmente 5/6 volte la settimana, e sempre tempo permettendo, nel giardino
del Castello così da potere dare la possibilità ai visitatori di scattare
fotografie, vedere da vicino i vari esemplari e farsi intrattenere dal
falconiere in spiegazioni sulla storia della falconeria, il suo utilizzo
moderno, la biologia e l’addestramento dei rapaci.
Panorama
Dalla cima della torre
principale e dal giardino si può godere di un'ampia vista del lago, particolarmente suggestiva nelle giornate più terse.
Essendo a strapiombo su Varenna permette infatti di vedere il Lago di Como in
tutto il suo splendore.
La storia che ci racconta il Castello di Vezio
Scendendo dalla scalinata che
parte dalla terrazza principale approdiamo nei sotterranei, che costituivano un
avamposto della linea difensiva Cadorna, pronta a contrastare un eventuale
tentativo di attacco tedesco proveniente dalla zona di Menaggio.
Le origini del castello sono risalenti al
periodo tardo romano, la leggenda narra che fosse stata la regina Teodolinda a
volere la costruzione del castello, ma anche altre località lombarde possono
rivendicare questa tradizione. I primi documenti che testimoniano l’esistenza
della fortificazione risalgono al 1368, si crede che nel borgo di Vezio
vivessero i servitori alle dipendenze del castello, ma queste ipotesi sono
ancora tutte da verificare.
All’interno del
maniero troviamo quello che con tutte le probabilità è l’uliveto più a nord del
mondo, dal quale si produce un olio D.O.P. di notevole pregio.
Narrazioni e leggende
Un’altra particolarità del
castello di Vezio è la leggenda del fantasma della regina Teodolinda, che narra
dello spettro che vaga per i corridoi del castello o nei giardini nelle notti
senza luna, e i gestori rievocano la storia con figure di gesso e cartapesta.
Tra le varie
altre curiosità spicca il fossile del Lariosauro: rettile che abitava le zone
di acqua salmastra, della lunghezza di circa un metro che appartiene ad una
categoria acquatica estinta.

Falconry
One of the peculiarities of this castle is that since some
years it has been hosting a center of care and training for birds of prey,
which allows visitors to know and appreciate the ancient art of falconry. The
training phases are normally held 5/6 times a week, and always weather
permitting, in the garden of the Castle so as to give visitors the opportunity
to take pictures, see the various models closely and be entertained by the
falconer in explanations on the history of falconry, its modern use, the
biology and training of birds of prey.

From the top of the main
tower and from the garden you can enjoy a wide view of the lake, particularly
evocative in the clearest days. Being overhanging on Varenna it allows in fact
to see the Lake of Como in all its splendor.
The story told by Castello di Vezio
Coming down from the stairs
that starts from the main terrace we reach the basement, which constituted an
outpost of the Cadorna defensive line, ready to oppose a possible attempt by
Germans coming from the Menaggio area.
The origins of the
castle date back to the late Roman period, legend says that it was Queen
Teodolinda who wanted to build the castle, but also other Lombard localities
can claim this tradition. The first document that testify the existence of this
fortification date back to 1368, it is believed that in the village of Vezio
lived servants employed by the castle, but these hypotheses are still to be
verified.Inside the manor we find what is probably the northest olive grove in
the world, from which is produced great quality olive oil.
Legends
Another peculiarity of
Castello di Vezio is the legend of the ghost of Queen Teodolinda, which tells
of the ghost that wanders through the corridors of the castle or in the gardens
on moonless nights, and the managers evoke history with chalk figures.
Among the other curiosities
stands out the fossil of the Lariosaurus: reptile that inhabited the brackish
water areas, about one meter long that belongs to an extinct aquatic category.
