The lakefront
Source of Fiumelatte
Proceeding towards Lecco, you reach Fiumelatte, a hamlet of
Varenna, which takes its name from the river that passes there. This
watercourse has two extraordinary features: it is the shortest in Italy, only
250 meters and it is also a temporary torrent, appears at the end of March and
goes back to dry at the beginning of October!
The name derives from the color of water, which flows so impetuous that it looks like milk. This particular feature is due to the slope of the river bed (36 degrees) and to the brittle limestone that the torrent carries with it while dying its course.
It can be reached on foot, passing the cemetery of Varenna towards Lecco and following a path that runs along the lake.
